Mazinger Z é um super-robô gigante, construído com um metal fictício chamado Super-Alloy Z, que é forjado a partir de um novo elemento (Japanium) extraído de um reservatório encontrado apenas no sedimento do Monte japonês. Fuji. O mecha foi construído pelo Professor Juzo Kabuto como uma arma secreta contra as forças do mal, representada na série pelas Feras Mecânicas (mecha usado para fins malignos) do Dr. Hell. Este último era o membro alemão de uma equipe arqueológica japonesa, que descobriu ruínas de uma civilização pré-grega perdida em uma ilha chamada Bardos (ou Birdos, embora algumas traduções inconsistentes tenham identificado a ilha como sendo a verdadeira ilha grega de Rodes); a civilização foi vagamente baseada na antiga Mycenae e foi chamada de Império Mycéne na série. Uma de suas descobertas foi que o Mycene usava um exército de titãs de aço com cerca de 20 metros de altura (compare com a lenda grega de Talos).
