A história se concentra em Kenichi Shirahama, um estudante médio de 16 anos que foi escolhido em toda a sua vida. No entanto, em seu primeiro dia de aula, ele se encontra e faz amizade com o misterioso estudante de transferência, Miu Fūrinji. Impulsionado por seu desejo de se tornar mais forte, ele a segue até Ryōzanpaku, um dojo que abriga vários mestres de diversas artes marciais, liderados por seu avô Hayato Fūrinji, que é conhecido como o homem mais forte da Terra. Depois de aprender o básico com Miu, Kenichi é capaz de vencer um membro de alto escalão do clube de karatê da escola, e se torna um alvo para todos os delinquentes da escola. Embora inicialmente treinando para ficar mais forte e proteger-se, Kenichi eventualmente se torna um discípulo pleno de Ryōzanpaku, trabalhando duro para cumprir seu juramento de proteger os necessitados, especialmente Miu, com quem ele se apaixona.
